Fact Check: Korean Governing Party Official Did NOT Say Party Could Win Only 6 Seats In Next Election AI Generated

Did the former Innovation Committee chairman of the ruling People Power Party, In Yo-Han, say the party could win only six seats out of 49 constituencies in Seoul during upcoming parliamentary elections? No, that's not true: The post uses digitally fabricated video from a source without displaying that the video was fabricated or AI. There is no evidence In made a claim regarding six seats in upcoming elections.

The claim originated from a video (archived here) published by @chonnom79 (archived here) on TikTok, with a caption translated into English from Korean by Lead Stories staff reads:

The result showed that the People Power Party can possibly win only 6 parliamentary seats out of a total of 49 constituencies Seoul, right?

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The TikTok post is misleading since it failed to disclose that the video was a digital fabrication and it was copied from an original video (archived here) that appeared on YouTube, which identified it as a fabrication by using the hashtag #AI.

The original author of the video, @SeulKKaBang (archived here) is a political YouTube creator who is known to make satirical AI-generated videos using images of South Korean politicians. On his channel, such videos are always identified with the hashtag #AI, but in the TikTok post, that important identification and disclaimer is missing.

In Yo-Han (archived here) was a People Power Party (PPP) Innovation Committee chairman, from October 26,2023, to December 7, 2023 (archived here). PPP is the governing party of South Korea, but it currently lacks seats in parliament and may suffer from South Korean President Yoon's low approval ratings. In Yo-Han was appointed for a brief time to lead a special committee to rebuild the party for the next parliamentary election in April 2024.

He never made such a comment about six seats on the record, and comments about a '6 seats' forecast (archived here) may instead have come from the party's administration office.
